A sustainable and ethical Christmas gift guide

It’s gonna be a different Christmas this year, that’s for sure. I think this year will make more people want to celebrate with their loved ones in smaller settings and spend more time into finding sustainable gifts. I actually think the Christmas gifts will have a revival this year. I’ve collected a list of sustainable, fun and creative Christmas gifts for your closed ones.

Indoor garden “Kurt” by NordicGrow.

Indoor garden “Kurt” by NordicGrow.

Kurt the indoor garden

No big shock that our own product “Kurt” from NordicGrow made it to the list. Kurt is an indoor garden that take cares of itself. It comes with the seeds, nutrients and everything you need to start growing your own food at home. It has a built-in growing light meaning you don’t need to worry about sunlight. At the moment it’s only sold with herb seeds (Parsley, Coriander, Basil) but the system works to grow your own chili and other fruits too. Ethically made in Copenhagen from renewable materials. 2000 DKK (~2800 SEK).

Clothing patterns

Birgitta Helmersson runs the zero waste clothing store Helgrose in Malmö which I found when they only had been open for three weeks a few years back. They are still rocking it and recently started selling patterns for anyone who want to make their own zero waste clothes. Buy the pattern and a nice fabric and boom. The future is here you guys! From 10 EUR.

Organic luxury sheets

Read the label is a small Swedish company making the softest sheets I’ve slept in. GOTS certified organic cotton, ethically produced and a really safe and nice gift to give, and get. Available online and at Ecosphere in Stockholm.
From 850 SEK.

Second hand sewing machine

There are plenty of places where you can buy used sewing machines and they range from ~1000 SEK and up. If you truly care about someone and have the money to spend on a gift this is a really good one because it’s an investment. I got mine for free in a Facebook group from a girl that was changing career. It’s an old Husqvarna machine from 1979. I had them to some maintenance on it, which was around 1500 SEK, but since I got it for free I thought it was worth it, I’m extremely happy to have my sewing machine. I suggest you look for an older more sturdy one.

Plant based nylon socks

I was so amazed to find out that you can make nylon socks from castor plants. This is a small woman owned company from Sweden making stockings and socks. However only the socks are plant based. I have the socks in black and would love to have them in all colors. Hoping they will make more styles from this super awesome plant based material. From 139 SEK.

Books from small publishing houses

Corona has been hard on all of us, and some businesses are really struggling now. My new years resolution for 2020 was to finish the books I start and essentially read more, and man I’ve read so many books this year and it makes me so happy to have found my way back home to the magical world of books. Seriously! If you care about books, literature or human race at all - support a small independent book publishing house and buy hardcover books. Here’s a recommendation Khaled Alesmael - En port till havet from Leopard förlag or the book “The secret gardener : dumsnåla tips för nygamla odlare” by Elin Unnes which is an awesome book for anyone who’s interested in learning more about gardening.

From 200 SEK.

The secret gardener by Elin Unnes in Swedish.

Socks and underwear

I know it’s a classic to give a pair of socks, a pair of T-shirts or other clothing items so here are some that I personally love.
