Visit Copenhagen like a pro
Eat, shop and stroll in Copenhagen as a local (vegan)
Copenhagen is the perfect place when you want to visit a city where you can try yummy natural wines and cocktails, eat really delicious food, walk in beautiful historical surroundings and shop second hand. At least that’s what I do all the time. Most tourists visit Vesterbro and stay in Vesterbro, but there’s so much more to explore so here’s my favorite things to do in Copenhagen that would fit any tourist-not-wanting-to-do-touristy things. If you’re a vegan you’ve come to the right place, because so am I.
One thing before we start: It is very worth it to rent a bike, don’t forget to wear a helmet (honestly, it’s stupid to bike without a helmet).
Nørrebro
To eat
Kaf, Birkegade. Start the day with brunch on Kaf – a vegan café where you can have breakfast or try their sweet pastries, perfect for what I in Swedish would call fika, but since there’s not good word for that in English, we’ll just call it coffee and something sweet.
Rondo For lovely bread check in the very popular bakery Rondo on Sjællandsgade. Often sold out.
Gaarden og gaden Nørrebrogade, Rondo is also the bread providers of the restaurant Gaarden og gaden, or Gaga, that I love. Not a vegan restaurant but their chef is the bomb at making delicious vegan food. Wouldn’t hurt to make a note about vegan requirements when you book tho.
Mikkeller Ramen to Biiru on Griffenfeldsgade has amazing ramen. Not a fancy romantic place tho, if that’s the vibe you’re looking for.
Ranee’s on Blågårds plads gives you great thai in a chill very non-fancy restaurant.
If the weather is nice I’d recommend take away dumplings at GAO on Blågårdsgade, noodles at Nittiya’s Thai Take away on Jagtvej or a vegan pizza from Stefanos Pizza on Stefansgade. Stefansgade is also a very cute street.
Sustainable shopping in Nørrebro
The sustainable store Res-Res, Sjællandsgade 7, Fremtiden Second hand on Elmegade 40, Røde kors Megastore on Fælledvej 4, and another sustainable fashion store BeAwear on Nørrebrogade 5. You might also want to stroll down Jægersborgsgade, which is a wonderful small little street with plenty of unique stores, like My favorite things and the wine store Terroiristen.
Amager
Amager is located on the opposite side of the city from Nørrebro, usually seen down on by locals, but the place I call home and that I really really love.
Ingolfs kaffebar, A great place for brunch, a glass of wine in a chill environment, some coffee or lunch. Ask for the vegan brunch option.
Sustainable shopping on Amager
If you’re on Amager I’d suggest you walk Amagerbrogade and pop into Tapirus second hand, 2ndByNutid second hand, the cute store Alrum and Alice Kaffebar - which is a fancy coffee place, but I go there to buy natural wine.
If you eat cheese there’s Cheese deli store called Ost og deli on Holmbladsgade that is very cute. I don’t eat cheese, but I go there and buy natural wine as well. There’s also a very nice Frelsens hær second hand store on Holmbladsgade, and a cafe called Vores Kaffebar, which I enjoy.
You won’t find too many good restaurants on Amager in my opinion, I’m still waiting for them to open, but you’ll find some fast food options such as Maui Poke and Wokshop.
Indre By
Indre By is just as it sounds, the inner city where you find the fancy stores and historical buildings are located. There’s plenty of restaurants in Indre By, some of my favorites are listed below, but let’s start with some good strolling or biking places.
Torvehallerne, Frederiksborggade. A marketplace where you can stroll around, maybe buy fancy tea or have a second fika and try a flødebolle from Glean, buy some nice flowers, take nice Instagram photos, I don’t know, I just find Torvehallerne very nice. Just around the corner you have the lovely Ørstedsparken park. If the weather is nice, you know what to do.
Østerlandsk Thehus, If you’re into tea just like me - a big tea store with a vintage feel. They have a million different teas to choose from.
Kailo Yoga - Yes, this is the place where I do yoga every week and it’s the loveliest yoga place I’ve been to.
Glyptoteket, probably on your tourist guide but very worth a visit.
To eat
Slurp Ramen joint, super super yummy ramen. An expensive lunch, but worth it.
Dough Girls Doughnuts, crazy donuts with multiple delicious vegan options.
Din nye ven on Sankt Peders Stræde, a lowkey café and lunch restaurant that always has a couple of good vegan lunch options.
Ark, a plant-based fine dining restaurant. A very expensive, beautiful, tasty and fun experience. Would love to visit again, when I’m rich.
Nansensgade 30, my husband’s favorite restaurant, they have a very big selection of wines and they can make totally A OK vegan dinner - but make sure to let them know when you book.
Den Vandrette, one of my favorite restaurants. I put it here so only the hardcore fans would find it. No but seriously it’s super nice. Give them a visit, you won’t regret it.
Apollo bar, I love the staff, I love the drinks and the food is good too.
That’s it for now. I might write another post with my recommendations for Vesterbro and Østerbro. Meanwhile I also suggest you take a look at my Second hand-guide for Amager and My Favorite Second Hand stores in Copenhagen.
