One night at hotel Villa Copenhagen

A little review of the hotel

Villa Copenhagen opened up in the summer of 2020 and is located in Vesterbro in central Copenhagen. I moved to Copenhagen during the same time and have been eager to visit the hotel ever since I heard of it (and started following their beautiful Instagram account. We checked in on my Birthday weekend to have a change of scenary (we’ve been in lockdown for a few months and spent most of the time in our little apartment due to the cold outside). This is how our stay was.

Checking in at the hotel

Due to the pandemic we were asked to check in during a specific time, which we appreciated. However there was still a few other groups waiting to check in at the same time. The check in was pretty simple, but we both felt like we could have been given a few recommendations. Due to the pandemic all meals has to be eaten at the room, and we were informed of this during the check-in, but it would have been nice to be suggested a restaurant that offered take away, maybe they could have had a deal with a restaurant or something that we could do during our stay.

The rooms are neutral in color and are decorated in a Scandinavian meet Midcentury Modern style.

The interior

The hotel is beautifully designed, and after passing the little shop called Passagen where they’ve selected a few sustainable brands and products, (kind of, I could also see Burberry nailpolish and things I wouldn’t consider to be eco friendly) you’re welcomed has a big beautiful and airy hall with glass ceiling. The building used to hold the old Central Post office, and has a very grand feel to it. The rooms are in a Scandinavian minimalist design mixed with with Mid century modern accents – a style that I personally love, and that is super trendy right now. The bathroom had soap, shampoo and conditioner from the brand Skandinavisk in a magical scent called “Skog” (meaning forest in Swedish and Norwegian). The minibar had drinks from local beverage companies offering organic rhubarb juice alongside with local craft beers and a some spirits.

The bathroom was super cozy with big bathing towels, a shower and the toilet separated with a wall.

When I woke up on my birthday, my husband had placed a gift in the bathroom.

The location

The hotel is located next to the central train station, and our window was facing the tracks, meaning we could hear the calls from the speakers and we didn’t have a beautiful view outside. This wasn’t an issue for us but if you’re looking for a hotel with a view or are sensitive to city noises this might not be the hotel for you. However, Vesterbro is considered to be a hip downtown area, and a place that has been gentrified. There are still a lot of homeless people and drug addicts in the neighborhood. I used to work at Kødbyen (the old meat pack district), which is very close and holds amazing restaurants, but I was shocked to see people shooting up drugs when going to work when I had just moved here. I believe drugs and poverty are societal issues in every country, so this is just my way of giving a description of the area. However, the hotel isn’t considered to be located in a dangerous area, in fact a bunch of hotels are located in this neighborhood.

I can highly recommend a walk to Chao Viet Kitchen on Kattesundet 8, around the corner from the famous shopping street Strøget. Lots of vegan options and absolutely delicious.

The outdoor pool

The hotel has an outdoor pool, which you need to pre-book, and has an additional cost of 45 DKK/person and 30 minutes. I would have preferred that the entrance was included in the room price. The pool is heated with excess heat from the hotel, which I liked, but it was a little too cold for us. We visited the pool during a Friday evening in March and the weather outside was cold, so it would have been nicer with a little warmer water, but I totally understand that draws more energy so my advice is to book a slot when it’s warmer outside or be prepared for a cooling experience. (I don’t have photos from the pool, so you’ll just have to enjoy more photos from the room.)

Love and I heading to the pool.

What about sustainability?

To be completely frank with you I’m not sure how Villa Copenhagen really works with their environmental footprint or with sustainability overall. The website says they follow the UN sustainability goals, but… who doesn’t? Other than offering organic drinks in the minibar, organic body and hair care in the shower, and the pool is heated with excess heat (which is great!) I’m not really sure what they do, and I felt it was more important to give a vibe of luxury than sustainability if you know what I mean. However, they might be doing more than what they communicate. I don’t know.

Would I recommend it?

Yes, absolutely. Copenhagen is such a beautiful and fun city and Vesterbro district as well. The overall experience was super nice, both because of the beautiful design and feeling of luxurious surroundings, but also thanks to my husband that took me there and gave me a lovely birthday.
