A local vegans guide to Copenhagen

Copenhagen is a great food city, however it might be a bit harder to find vegan options. As a vegan myself, living with a non-vegan husband, we’re always looking for places where the both of us will enjoy our breakfast, lunch or dinner. These are a few places I really enjoy.

Vegan breakfast and brunch

To be honest with you the normal breakfast and brunch places in Copenhagen aren’t good at finding vegan options, unfortunately (Mad og Kaffe and Fars dreng, I’m looking at you…) but there are options:

The Sixteen Twelve, located on the lovely street Jægersborgsgade. Very nice vegan options on the menu that are served to catch the eye. Very Instagram-friendly and super yummy.

Baryl, in Østerbro and Frederiksberg has great vegan options, especially if you come hungry.

Cafe Kaf and Le Kaff, I have honestly never understood if they are owned by the same owner. Anyways, plant-based cafés with loads of things to choose from. One of them is located in Nørrebro and the other one on Amager Strand. Sandwiches, pastries and that kind of thing.

If you’re in a hurry Joe and the Juice and Espresso House has great vegan breakfast.

Vegan lunch

La Tre Street Kitchen, Vietnamese street food in the middle of the city on Studiestræde. A tiny place with just a few seats, but fortunately you’re close to parks and benches. A lot of food to a great price. Ask them for a vegan salad, you can thank me later.

District Tonkin, yes, I do enjoy Vietnamese food. They have a great salad and a tasty bánh mì on their different locations.

POPL Burger, it was an absolute hit when Noma opened their burger spot in Nyhavn during the pandemic, but it wasn’t until recently I had the chance to try their spicy vegan burger, and it was a dream. Price is a bit up there though.

Square Burgers, another amazing burger place. Used to be a food truck parked outside on Christiania but has now leveled up - still located at the main entrance. They do the best vegan burgers, so so so good.

Wokshop, a thai food chain in Denmark with multiple vegan options and it’s not the usual woked veggies, but more exciting options. I’m totally in love with their morning glory dish.

Vegan dinner

Most places are not vegan per se, but have always made me super happy when we’ve eaten there. Some of the places have gone the extra mile to make something vegan even when they didn’t have vegan options on the menu, which just makes my heart smile.

Donda in Christianshavn was one of my favourite restaurants, their cuisine focusing on Latin American flavours but they made fantastic vegan dishes when requested., After having opened Donda Deli in Vesterbro the owner Qasim decided to change the concept at Donda in Christianshavn from Latin American (still available at Donda Deli) to Sri Lankan and South Asian, and they are changing the name to Khana. I hope to try them soon and see what they have to offer in terms of vegan adaptations.

Levantin is a new player in town, located on the iconic Værnedamsvej. I was recently invited to try their sharing menu - that can be made vegan - and it was amazing. Think fancy upscale meze in a soft and elegant surrounding. The starters were to die for; the baba ganoush was the best baba ganoush I have ever tried, the harissa (chili paste) was also so rich in flavour with a perfect amount of heat, the honey glazed carrots (I do eat honey) with green beans were *chefs kiss* - and the pickled veggies… mmh! There’s nothing I love more than pickled anything! My only suggestion would be to contact them beforehand if you don’t eat honey, as some of the dishes contain honey.

Ranee’s, thai food, super casual and very good. Enjoy a nice dinner with friend without breaking the bank. Located on Blågårdsplads.

Ark, absolutely fantastic fine dining vegan restaurant. An expensive experience totally worth it if you have the money. Has a Michelin green star.
